In the second night in our Reel and Unravel season, Phil Okwedy and 20 singers from the London Shanty Collective haul up tales that haunt humanity. In stories of the passage from life to death, it is seldom plain sailing and often the final destination is not what was bargained for. In stories of empire, the terrifying experience of the passage on the slave ship is known but largely ignored. Imagine, then, a story in which the suffering of the middle passage leads to the triumph of a final return home…
A profound, reflective and powerful night of tales that are particular and universal.
Plus, Jo Clayton brings us the second instalment in our serial story, The Little Beggar. If you missed Sian Kidd’s Episode One, then don’t worry – you can catch it on Youtube.
Born in Cardiff to a Welsh mother and a Nigerian father, Phil grew up in the wild west of Wales where he still lives and works. He has appeared in London at Torriano Story Night, and we are delighted welcome him to East London as we celebrate Black History Month.
